On 21st September, the government announced a new Energy Bill Relief Scheme that aims to help businesses with their energy costs. ‍ The scheme will support eligible businesses with their energy costs between 1st October 2022 and 31st March 2023.

Under the scheme, the government will provide a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices for all eligible non-domestic customers.

The scheme will be available to non-domestic energy customers that are:

- On fixed price contracts that were agreed on or after 1st December, 2021. You can find the applicable discount levels based on the date of your agreement on the Gov website.

- Signing up to new fixed-price contracts

- On deemed / out of contract or variable tariffs

- On flexible purchase or similar contracts

After support had begun, on 1st October the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) issued an update on the support package under the Energy Bill Relief Scheme for non-domestic energy users

It has now been confirmed that the maximum discount for those on a default or variable tariff will be 34.5p/kWh for electricity and9.1p/kWh for gas. This has been lowered from the original discount which was40.5p/kWh for electricity and 11.5p/kWh for gas.

A further update has been introduced to the business energy price cap. Businesses that signed their energy contracts after December 1st, 2021, will now also be eligible for support. Previously this was only for businesses who agreed their contract after April 1st, 2022.

As with the energy support for households, businesses do not have to do anything to receive this support. The cap will automatically be added to energy bills.

Whilst this support is much needed, the government rollout has somewhat sent a confusing explanation of what the price cap looks like.
